AN ALL-INCLUSIVE SPORTS STADIUM FOR GALLE

Work on the new Galle-Dadella Sports Complex was inaugurated on 28 September 2009 under the patronage of Hon Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Urban Development and Sacred Area Development, with the participation of Hon Sarath Amunugama, Minister of Public Administration and His Worship Methsiri deSilva, Mayor of Galle. This stadium is being constructed on the request of Hon Lionel Premasiri, Deputy Minister of Social Services and Social welfare, as part of the Greater Galle Plan drawn up by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) of the Ministry of Urban Development and Sacred Area Development.
This ultra-modern sports complex is being built to fulfil a major and long-felt need of the Galle District. The development of the 6 hectare (16-acre) site is being supervised by the UDA, who are the principal architects, with construction work being carried out by The Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation and the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau.
This project, which is expected to cost Rs 450 million, will result in an all-inclusive sports complex with training facilities for the athletes and schoolchildren of Galle District, containing a 400 metre racing track, a sports stadium, an indoor stadium, separate courts for tennis, netball and volleyball, a car park, a pavilion, a swimming pool, lodgings and an office building.
