Koslanda

Koslanda Ancient Temple

This temple is located in the Ampititenna Grama Niladhari Division in the Haldummulla District Secretariat Division of the Badulla District of the Uva Province. It is a short distance towards Punagala from Koslanda  on the Colombo-Beragala highway.

A granite seated Buddha image is in the inner chamber of the temple. It is said that this image was brought to this temple from a cave located in Udahamulla village. It appears that the folds of the robe of the image had been painted when the image was brought to the temple. Either side of this image are sculpured two standing Buddha images and the images of the chief deciples of the Buddha, Sariuth and Mugalan.

The ceiling of the temple is replete with lotus motifs while the walls contain the paintings of the twenty four past Buddhas and the paintings of the events of the first seven weeks spent by the Buddha after enlightenment. Apart from these an ancient Bodhi tree is visible in the temple compound. The Archaeological Department had conserved the wall round the Bodhi tree and the Dagoba. The temple had been declared a protected monument.
