Kirinda Maha Viharaya

The temple is in the Tissamaharama  District Secretariat Division and could be reached by traversing 7 km along the Tissamaharama – Kirinda road.

Folklore assigns it to be the point in Ruhuna where  Queen Viharamahadevi is supposed to have  disembarked and that King Kavantissa had constructed the temple to commemorate the event in the 2nd c B.C. A metrically composed inscription of the reign of King Mahadathika Mahanaga of the 2nd c. A.D.discovered in the temple premises mentions of a person named  Uparajanka being  converted to a Buddhist at this temple.
