Dutch Fort Batticalo

The Dutch Fort is in Batticaloa Town of the Munmunai North Divisional Secretariat in Batticaloa District. This fort was built during the time of the Dutch occupation (          ) and had been expanded and maintained by the British. The fort precinct near the lagoon of the Batticaloa Town can be identified as a Buddhist monastery, which had been in existence in the early centuries of the Christian era, long before the fort was built, from the discovery of a stone chatra and an asanagala belonging to that period.
