The Hon  Rohana Dissanayake, MP was born on 9th March 1958. A businessman by profession, he entered politics through the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). He was elected to the Matale Municipal Council in 1991 and served as Leader of the Opposition on the Council. Re-elected in 1997 through the People’s Alliance, he became Mayor of Matale. In 2001 he was appointed Chief SLFP Organiser for Matale.

Contesting the General Election of 2004, he was elected a Member of Parliament for Matale District, a position he has held since. That year he was appointed Deputy Minister of Samurdhi  Affairs. In 2005 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Urban Development and Water Supply and Deputy Minister of Highways.

In 2007 he was appointed Minister of Urban Development.

In addition to his political career, the Hon Minister has had a distinguished civic career both in his home district and in the whole country. He is the President of the Table Tennis association of Sri Lanka, President of the Matale District Hockey Association (Matale is called the ‘Cradle of Hockey in Sri Lanka’) and President of the Cricket Association,  Matale. He is also Lay President of the World Buddhist Sangha Youth .
